Many know that using chewing tobacco can cause mouth cancer. However many don’t know some of the other associated risks of chewing tobacco, or what type of cancers it can actually cause. The early signs of oral cancer are not something to ignore. Especially with an increase of individuals and the younger generation starting to use smokeless tobacco more, it is pertinent that they become aware of the risks. This article will take a further look into the risks associated with chewing tobacco, along with what the potential health risks are.

Chewing Tobacco and the Different Types of Cancer

Many are aware that the use of chewing tobacco and cancer of the mouth go hand in hand. However, other types of cancer can be formed as well. According to the National Cancer institute, there are three types of cancer associated with chewing tobacco:

  • Oral Cancer – this is cancer that is caused in the mouth, tongue, lips and cheeks.
  • Esophageal Cancer — this is cancer in the esophagus, which is a tube that moves food to the stomach.
  • Pancreatic Cancer – this is cancer in the pancreas, which is a large gland behind the stomach.
  • Other Forms — there are other forms of cancer not mentioned by the national cancer institute. They can form in many different places in the body. From the mouth all the way through the digestive tract.

Mouth Cancer and the increased risks of obtaining mouth cancer for tobacco chewers makes chewing tobacco and cancer go hand in hand. With chewing tobacco use on a continuous rise, so have the number of individuals obtaining mouth cancer risen. In fact, chewing tobacco is the leading cause of mouth cancer. According to the mouth cancer foundation, 90% of individuals that were diagnosed with mouth cancer were tobacco chewers. This extremely high percentage should make individuals aware of the fact that chewing tobacco is extremely dangerous.

While chewing tobacco and cancer have been commonly associated together, one should be aware that it also causes many other problems with the body that are not limited to mouth cancer. Chewing tobacco also causes dental issues, along with esophageal and pancreatic cancers. Therefore chewing tobacco still has its own set of risks over smoking. And should be taken extremely seriously.

So serious in fact, that when you use chewing tobacco you need to know that you are putting your life at risk. Your putting yourself at risk of dying from cancer.
