Ok. I’m done. It’s time to quit smokeless tobacco. This is going to suck. Bad.

I know how much this is going to suck because this isn’t my first rodeo. I know what to expect, I know how this is going to feel, and I am not looking forward to it.

Cold turkey is the only way for me. It’s the only way that truly works. I’ve tried everything, weening off, patches, gums, lozenges (which happened to be my favorite), switching to a different product or a product I thought was less harmful. The truth of the matter is this, I am a stone cold addict. And it’t time to quit.

So this is day 1. This is my quit day. This is when I change my life for the better.

These are the reasons I quit dipping:

I’m tired of being a slave to a can.
I’m tired of avoiding people and situations, so I can be alone with my dip.
I want to grow old and see my kids grow up.
I want to be healthy.
I want to be in control of my life.

There are a whole lot more reasons why I want to quit chewing tobacco, but for now this is all I have.

How are we going to add weight to our message?

Gruen Von Behrens speaks about his battle with oral cancer.

The simple answer is media, all kinds of it. I have been racking my brain thinking about what I can add to the site that would actually help new quitters. I know that the same ‘ol written content is useful, but what really motivates people to make that first step?

What is going to give our message the weight that it needs to reach the people who are searching for that message and their freedom? How are we going to get our point across?

Because that is what this whole thing is all about, helping people quit. Bottom line. This isn’t about money or fame, trust me. The scourge of spit tobacco had me under its spell, and I broke free. I need to help others find that same freedom. And on top of all of that, this website and quit project is a labor of love for me. Something that I will never give up.

What We’re Working On

We are working on some cool stuff around here, and this last section that I added is one that I think is going to be really powerful. It is a new quitting videos section with a whole lot of stuff that I think is going to prove to be very inspirational. Reading about something can be powerful, but actually seeing it can be ground breaking. This is why I chose video for my next project, and other projects further on down the road.

As sad as these stories are, and we really do feel for the families and all involved. Because we know, and can now see, just how spit tobacco tears families apart and ends lives. We know that this is the true face of chewing tobacco, the ulgly side of tobacco that most want to ignore. This side of spit tobacco is one that needs to be seen.

Yea, these videos have been circulating the internet for years, I understand that. But where can you go to get this many stories all in one place? Here, that’s where.

Rick Bender, a baseball player, quitter, cancer survivor and anti spit tobacco advocate said it perfectly “The day you start using tobacco of any kind you put yourself at risk of cancer.” Truly, it can’t be said any better or simpler than that. This is the message that we need to promote, what people need to know and understand.

Rick Bender talks about his cancer from chewing tobacco.

A Thanks to The Creators of These Videos

I want to personally thank every single one of these guys, even though they will probably never read this. Without every one of them doing what they do, these messages would never be heard.

They are so sad and powerful, that they must be seen and heard.

So, check out our videos section, and let me know what you think with a comment. You can post them on this page or on the actal videos page. Because our members and lurkers opinions mean everything to me and us. They are why this place is here, and why we do what we do.

The first few weeks of quitting smokeless tobacco is the biggest challenge, so here are some recommendations to help you get through them successfully. First of all, congratulations to you, and give yourself a pat on the back. Now it’s time to get all of your ducks in a row, and plan ahead.

Make a list of the activities you do when you chew tobacco. It’s time to change these habits up. Decide on an activity that you will do instead of reaching for the can of dip. This can be almost anything such as having a snack of fresh fruit or vegetables, making a to-do list, or anything that distracts you from the craving. Keep yourself busy, and keep that shit outta yer mouff.

Plan to get some projects done that have been on hold. For the first few weeks, you will want to keep yourself busy and distracted. Throwing yourself into productive projects will make you feel like you’ve accomplished something in addition to keeping your mind off of tobacco. This can be a huge help. Even though it feels like your not getting anything done, and everything frustrates you, keep busy!

Make an agreement with one of the member of your forum that you will call them if you think you may start chewing again. Keep your end of the contract and make that call. Pre-planning for the first few weeks can help you get over the toughest part of quitting by giving you a contingency plan.

Most parents inclination is to protect their children from heartache, but are you, unintentionally, setting them up for potential heart break? If you dip tobacco there is a chance that you are. When asked many children report one of their greatest fears is the death of a parent. However, dipping greatly increases your risk of developing major health complications that could very easily result in your death. You have an increased chance of experiencing a stroke, heart attack, or developing cancer.

Strokes and heart attacks can result in immediate death meaning that you will not be able to tell your child goodbye. You will not get to them how proud you are of them, how much you love them, or your hopes for their future. While cancer gives you the chance to obtain closure with your children, it can be greatly upsetting for them to watch as the parent they love slowly slips away. This is especially true for younger children who are not truly able to comprehend what is happening. All that they know is that they are losing a parent who loves them, cares for them, reads to them, and attends their school events. This is something that they cannot get back.

There are few things that can be more of a motivating factor to make a change in your life than your children. The next time you start to take a dip imagine your son or daughter experiencing major life events such as graduations, marriage, and having children of their own. Now, imagine that you are not there. Today is the day to stop dipping for yourself and your children.

There’s no doubt at all that the harmful effects of chewing tobacco have been known for over a century, and its devastating effects on individuals, families and the societies in general are very scary and serious indeed. Despite this fact, tobacco products continue to cause the death of millions of people every single year, even in the most affluent. Quitting is hard because there is a list of withdrawal symptoms that are absolutely horrible. One of the worst is depression. Many quitters complain of feeling heavy-hearted, down in the dumps and downright gloomy when they are in the midst of quitting. If you’re experiencing this, know that it does pass. And that quitting is worth it in the long run.

Importance of Quitting Chewing Tobacco

Apart from being a leading cause of death and the development of mouth cancer, chewing tobacco impairs the functioning of one’s brain in a slow but sure way contributing to lesser and lesser productivity. Those who are already addicted, will also agree that chewing tobacco is a very expensive habit in the long run and it puts very significant deep holes in one’s pocket draining their finances with time. Frequent use of tobacco products have also been linked to the development of dangerous and hard-to-deal with diseases like hear disease, different kinds of cancer, strokes, increased risks of heart attacks and even sanitation problems. Upon quitting chewing tobacco, some of the immediate positive effects include but are not limited to: a heart rate that returns back to normal, restoration of a normal body temperature, elevated levels of oxygen in the blood and the chances of developing a heart attack, stroke or even cancers, decrease considerably.

Quitting Chewing Tobacco

Like any other habit, quitting chewing tobacco has proven to be quite a monumental task for many and some have not only struggled with this war, but also reported some depression while going through it. While the concept of depression can be quite a controversial one leading to many conclusions, it is a fact that all can agree that one can be depressed whether they are chewing tobacco or not. Therefore the level of depression that one gets by engaging in chewing tobacco or not, should be the starting point of any analysis that is bound to yield positive results. People get on the path of quitting chewing tobacco because they are uniquely depressed by its regular and constant use, which means that the benefits they derive from it are really short-term and robs them of the long-term benefits of enjoying life to its fullest.

Focusing on the Long-Term Benefits of Quitting Chewing Tobacco

There’s definitely bound to be some depression as one looses or fore-goes the short-term benefits of chewing tobacco especially in the very first days of weaning oneself from the habit. It is true however, that focusing on the long-term effects of quitting chewing tobacco for good, inspires one greatly to soldier on in their tobacco-free journey and provides the much-needed strength to deal with the depression. This result-oriented strategy has helped millions of addicts to quite not only chewing tobacco, but also other much more serious drugs or dangerous habits in life. Having this truth in the mind every time that depression knocks at the door while trying to quit chewing tobacco, will go along way to turn the depressive mood into joy and long-term success when one finally quits chewing tobacco and join the millions who have successfully managed to do so.

Many know that chewing tobacco can cause mouth cancer. They know that cancer and dip go together like peas in a pod. However many don’t know some of the other associated risks of chewing tobacco, the early signs of oral cancer, or what type of cancer it can actually cause. With an increase of individuals and the younger generation starting to use smokeless tobacco more, it is pertinent that they become aware of the associated risks. This article will take a further look into the risks associated with chewing tobacco, along with what the potential health risks are.

Cancer and Dip – Common Types of Cancer

Many are aware that chewing tobacco and cancer of the mouth can be formed. However, other types of cancer risks can be formed as well. According to the National Cancer institute, there are three types of cancer:

  • oral cancer — this is cancer that is caused in the mouth, including lips.
  • esophageal cancer — This is cancer in the esophagus, which is a tube that moves food to the stomach
  • pancreatic cancer — this is cancer in the pancreas, which is a large gland behind the stomach

Mouth Cancer and the risks increased risks of obtaining mouth cancer for tobacco chewers
chewing tobacco and cancer go hand in hand. With chewing tobacco on a continuous rise, so have the number of individuals obtaining mouth cancer. In fact, mouth cancer is the leading cause of mouth cancer. According to the mouth cancer foundation. 90% of individuals that were diagnosed with mouth cancer were tobacco chewers. This extremely high percentage should make individuals aware of the fact that chewing tobacco is extremely dangerous, even if it is done as a smokeless form.

Chewing tobacco is dangerous even though it is used as a smokeless form. While chewing tobacco and cancer have been commonly associated together, one should be aware that It causes many problems with the mouth, not only limited to mouth cancer, but also causes dental issues, along with esophageal and pancreatic cancer. Therefore chewing tobacco still has its own set of risk over smoking it.

Here is a video of it all going down:

Right after winning the PGA Championship. You can see him looking for it when he is feeling her up. Ill bet he was hurtin’ bad for a lipper.

Weak.

Here is another video of him spitting out his dip in front of everyone and their mama on national television.

We Can Help.

Chewing tobacco use in our youth has been declining for years. Which is a good sign when it comes to showing how the battle against big tobacco is turning out. But according to this article from the Los Angeles Times, it has stopped declining and remained static for some time now.

This is alarming, when our kids get hooked at such a young age, they are less likely to break free from nicotine’s grasp. Statistics show that the younger someone starts using smokeless tobacco, the harder it is to eventually quit using chewing tobacco. That is why it is imperative that we keep our youths use of tobacco products on the decline, and its so alarming to see that decline at a stand still.

Youth Chewing Tobacco Use

Youth Chewing Tobacco Use

At TheQuit.org, we know that we have to work as hard as we can to try to eliminate all tobacco use in our youth, as impossible as that may be to do, we will never lose hope. Check out the article below, quoted from the Los Angeles Times. It covers the decrease, and the recent lack of a decrease in the chewing tobacco use of our youth. It is also full of some very interesting statistics, and a whole slew of information that is extremely helpful on the topic.

If you yourself are thinking about quitting chewing tobacco, TheQuit.org can help. We are an online support community of quitters, who’s main goal is to help others become quitters. We know what it takes to quit, because we have all done just that.

Los Angeles Times • May 14, 2017
Smokeless tobacco use among U.S. kids and teens has leveled off. • By Karen Kaplan

LOS ANGELES — After years of decline, the rate of smokeless-tobacco use among young people in the United States has leveled off, new research shows.

In 2011, 5.2 percent of middle-school and high-school students reported using snuff, chewing tobacco or dipping tobacco at least once in the 30 days before they were interviewed for the National Youth Tobacco Survey, which is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That’s essentially the same as the 5.3 percent of young people who were considered smokeless-tobacco users in 2000.

The products are continuing to fall out of favor for the youngest kids in the survey, with use falling by an average of 4.6 percent per year among 9- to 11-year-olds.In addition, smokeless-tobacco use among kids between the ages of 12 and 14 fell by an average of 3.4 percent per year.

But tobacco companies gained a little ground among 15- to 17-year-olds, with use rising nearly 1 percent per year on average. Among high-school students, the trends were the same regardless of race, ethnicity or gender.

There were no changes in smokeless-tobacco use for students ages 18 or older.

The findings appeared in yesterday’s edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The researchers, from the Center for Global Tobacco Control at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, along with one colleague from the University of Pretoria in South Africa, speculated that new products like “moist snuff” helped the tobacco industry hold on to smokeless-tobacco customers. In addition, companies are not prohibited from using flavored products or free samples to entice potential customers, they noted.

Lower taxes on smokeless tobacco products relative to cigarettes might have played a role as well, the researchers added.

Many states have begun to restrict online and mail-order sales of smokeless tobacco, and authorities have stepped up enforcement of age-verification rules in places where smokeless tobacco products are sold.

The researchers said these efforts might have helped reduce sales among younger students.
