So, you want to know how to quit chewing tobacco cold turkey? Let me lay this out for you. Quitting chewing tobacco cold turkey is brutal. The nicotine withdrawal symptoms are absolute hell, but its the only way to go. I dipped cope for 15 years, and at the end of my use I was going through two cans a day. I had been hiding it from my wife and family for years, and was tired of the lies and being chained to a can.
I tried the whole nicotine replacement therapy thing, I used the patches. But like so many other failed attempts, I ended up using the patches as a crutch when I couldn’t dip. I would get some time by myself, and I was right back at it.
Eventually, I came across a community very similar to this one. What I learned is that it was essential that I quit cold turkey. That if I didn’t quit 100% today, right now and this second, that it would never happen. That was almost two years ago. I haven’t had a dip or any nicotine since, and wouldn’t change anything about it for the world. I’m finally free.
I also learned that signing in with my quit group and being a member of a community like this one was essential to my success. I couldnt have done it without our message boards.
Nothing takes the place of having the stones to actually quit, and stay quit cold turkey. But these are the things that I know help.

Eliminate All Temptation When Quitting Cold Turkey. A wise man once told me that if you don’t want to slip, don’t go to slippery places. As crazy as it sounds, you need to eliminate any and all temptation. This means laying low and not being around your friends that chew if you know you wont be able to push through. This also means that if you cant control yourself in certain situations or cant remove those situations, you should remove yourself from those situations. I have dipped everyday except for boot camp for 30years. Yesterday was the first day with no nicotine and I’m 1/2 way through day 2. I never want to dip again. But the sad thing is I really enjoy doing it.
Hang in there. First four days are hell. I’m one month quit tomorrow. Take it one day at a time and do whatever it takes to get through the first week. I dipped cope for 20 years
I’ve chewed for 8 years and have tried quitting more times then I can count. I’ll throw a can away at night and at 10am I’m buying one again in the morning. I made it a month once, and then I suddenly had the urge to chew and bought two cans! What do I do?
Ha funny you say that. I did that myself forever. Throw half a can away and then you are buying another the next day. How much money I wasted doing that no one knows. I am 5 days in quitting myself. I made the decision on my sisters first child birth. That day I can always look back on quitting. Get a date and stick to it so you will never forget the day you quit. Also go get fake dip Smokey Mountain Wintergreen if that helps. It is not the same but close enough. Buy a s**load of gum too. Also gum cancer is not fun. I haven’t had it and now don’t plan on getting it. I am free.
I chewed for 20 years and quit (cold turkey) over a month ago. There were a few drivers that have helped me thus far:
– I retired from the military and took the opportunity for a change in life style.
– Tony Gwynn (former professional baseball player) recently passed away in his mid-50’s as a result of cancer from chewing tobacco. I am in my mid-40’s and Tony G. seemed way to young to die.
The first few days were the roughest, but every time I had/have a craving, I remember how young Tony Gwynn was. I have 3 young children and owe them many more years. I also drank lots of water, chewed sugarless gum and sunflower seeds.
The cravings are now more infrequent and less intense. I know I can do it. Wish me luck! Good luck to all of those trying….YOU CAN DO IT!
Doesn’t it feel great to be free? 41 days quit today. I’m never going back!!!!! Thank God. I got through on sunflower seeds, sugarless gum (minty that gives a burn) and jolly ranchers.
Good luck to all. Freedom from the can is the best ever!!!!!!!
I’m 15 years old and have been dipping for almost a year. I really really want to quit. I’ve tried ecigs and sunflower seeds and other things like that. I dip probably 2-3 times a day and go through a can about every 3 or 4 days. I quit for 6 days and couldn’t do it. I really want to quit very badly. I don’t want it to be every time I get home from school I need to pack a lip. I’m only a sophomore and don’t want to get cancer. I always fear I will even though I’ve only used for about 11 months. Help! Any suggestions anyone please and thing will help. I just finished a lip and told myself it would be my last for real and really want it to be. I want to quit badly. Any help?
Did you get any help? Have you stayed quit? I hope so. I’ve done it for 16 years and quit many times, only to return. The thoughts to do it will be in my head for life, but I have to practice to ignore them and go on living. I think this site can be of good help. Well it’s my first day, cold turkey.
Just to update y’all about 2 and a half weeks and I’m doing great! No cravings what so ever I’ve dipped 3 times over these 2 weeks but not because I needed to just for enjoyment but now I don’t even want anymore thanks for the support fellas #killthecan
After 25 years of chewing over a can a day. I decided to quit cold turkey. I didn’t really have a reason picked out. Other then I got tired of telling people I’d quit if I had the will power. The first 3 days were hell and then it has gotten much easier with each day that follows. I did slip up and get drunk and let myself have a dip. But on a positive note it tasted horrible and I took it out within minutes. Hopefully that helps me not want one next time I’m drinking.
I am 3 1/2 days nicotine free. 10 year habit I am glad to say is gone.
5 days dip free!
i have chewed for 43 years and never tryed to stop…..i decided to stop because of insurance policys and the price of it all….stopped cold turkey ,,,,not a chew in 2 weeks.I hope i can hang in there
I have been chewing since I was 15. I have tried to quit a few times and got close but for some damn reason i would start up again. I stopped again 12 hours ago and its keeping me up atm driving me a little nuts i was chewing well over 2 cans most days. I will be 25 in 2 months and hope to be 2 months free. This first day is the worst.
I am over the month hump! I still crave the snuff pretty bad at times. My Daughter is my drill sergeant when I think I am buckling. I think the cold turkey way of quitting is the only way to go. I was doing 2 to 3 cans a day and I woke up the morning I quit and said I’m done. I think a person must really want to quit for themselves before they are successful.
I have no hope to share. The reason I chose cold turkey is because I’ve tried all the other ways to quit chew. I’ve never tried cold turkey. I quit about five years ago after seeing pictures of those same people on here with half their face cut off. But after a few months I forgot about those pictures. I lied to myself, said I won’t get that and went back to dipping. I could get oral cancer, I could have it now. I get mouth sores constantly. I think I’m knocking on cancers door. I think I’m going to look at the video’s and cancer pictures on this site, at least a few times a week for the next year. I should burn it into my brain. I should never forget that I am a contestant for half a face. We all are, each time we pack it.
